Blind tasting wine dinner 26th September

Tim from Wine Library here.
Some of you might know that i'll be heading to France in October to compete as a team for a World blind wine tasting competition organised by France’s leading wine magazine “La Revue du Vin de France” this competition was recently put on the world stage by an Australian film director Warwick Ross with the award winning documentary
‘Blind Ambition’

Joining me will be four of Australia's top Sommeliers that will be part of team Australia. This is the very first time Australia will be competing in this challenge but we have high hopes of bringing the trophy back home!

In light of the competition i thought it would be fun to host a Blind tasting wine dinner and invite you to experience the thrill of tasting wines in a blind format. Think of it like a wine trivia but no questions, you just have to guess the wine.
The idea is to hopefully do a dinner every month, it will be fun, you should come.

So here is our next dinner on the 26th of September

Wine tasting Wednesday 30th August

Casual Wine tasting
(standing cocktail style chatting with winemakers)
Wednesday 30th of Aug 6:30pm
On Wednesday 30th we will have Alex from Meadowbank, Jeff from Byrne Farm and Mark from Mount Macleod in Sydney, below you’ll find a little about each producer and a list of the wines they will be presenting. It’s a fascinating line up with Pinot Noir from no less than three states!
Meadowbank, Derwent Valley, TAS – Alex Deane
“Meadowbank’s vineyard is one of the most important in Tasmanian wine; a whole host of the best quality and most interesting Tasmanian wine brands source fruit from it. The label and winery itself has had a bit of a hiatus but renowned winemaker Peter Dredge has teamed up with the Ellis family to kick things back into life.” Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
Mount Macleod, Gippsland VIC – Mark Mathews
Organic Gippsland Values from Caledonia Australis, Mark Matthews is never going to win any awards for marketing or self-promotion, so it’s just as well he’s rather diligent at his day job. The kind of green credentials practiced at this family-owned Gippsland Estate deserves to be applauded. Winegrower-ecologist Matthews has recently passed his 10th year of organic certification and has instigated a weed management program using a combination of firestick and hard labour.
Byrne Farm, Orange NSW – Jeff Burn
Seduced by some fantastic bottles from Australia and France and enamoured by the camaraderie in the Hunter winemaking fraternity Byrne completed his winemaking degree and began stepping his way up the winemaking ladder. In 2007Jeff made his first pilgrimage to Burgundy, landing in the heart of Vosne-Romanée at François Pinault’s Domaine de Eugénie. He would return for the 2014 vintage, by which time he would be heading up the winemaking for the Agnew family’s trio of properties, Audrey Wilkinson, Poole’s Rock and Cockfighters Ghost. Managing the Agnew portfolio exposed Byrne to a wealth of growers across the breadth of Australia’s wine regions. But there was one source he became particularly excited about: the pristine high-country Chardonnay and Pinot Noir he was getting from Justin and Pip Jarrett’s organic vineyard in Orange. So, in 2019, when the time had come to branch out on his own, he took a trip across the Blue Mountains to where he finds himself today making small parcels of high country Pinot Noir and Chardonnay.

Vinos del Sur
Masterclass and dinner on Patagonia
Two superstar names making wines that challenge some of the best in the world!

We will be tasting two of Argentina's most sought after producers from
Patagonia: Bodega Chacra & Bodega Noemia
Patagonia the region
Lying between 36°S and 45°S (about the same latitude as New Zealand), making its vineyards among the most southern in the world. The region is essentially a desert and the vineyards are mainly located along the rivers (especially the Colorado and Río Negro) that run from the Andes and provide water to irrigate the vines.

As a name, Patagonia might be better known as the maker of jackets and outdoor clothing. But Patagonia the region turns out some stunningly distinctive wines that will make you want to add the name to your wine vocabulary.

Now if Mendoza Malbec is Argentina’s superstar pin up boy at present then Patagonian wine represents the young, slightly more refined, upstart – daring to try something a bit different in order to get recognised. Whilst Mendoza wines can be characterised by their power, fruit and macho qualities, Patagonian wines offer a bit of a twist on the style with cooler minerality and a bracing streak of acidity, perfect for more delicate dishes.

Patagonia is a region worth exploring in person – with or without Patagonia gear – but until that is possible, you can taste it in the wine.
Pierro Incisa della Rocchetta is the grandson of the family responsible for making Tenuta San Guido (Sassicaia). Pierro is a dreamer, he always wanted to do his own thing independent of family ties. In 2004 Pierro heard about an abandoned Pinot vineyard in Patagonia, originally planted in 1932. And so, began what is now Bodega Chacra, generally recognised as the greatest Pinot Noir produced in South America.

Over time another vineyard from 1955 was added along with more plantings. Vineyards are tended using organic and biodynamic practices. The old vines are planted on their own rootstocks, producing tiny bunches with incredibly concentrated flavours. Since 2017, Pierro has been working with famed burgundy wine-maker JM Roulot to produce chardonnay in Patagonia to great acclaim.
Bodega Noemia is owned by Italian wine producer countess Noemi Cinzano (of the vermouth family) and Danish winemaker Hans Vinding-Diers. Hans had been working in a commercial winery in Patagonia when he discovered some very special museum wines in the cellar. Captivated he tracked down the source of these wines; a very special 1930’s planting of Malbec which became the foundation for Bodega Noemia. They fell in love with the place and decided to restore it and return it to its original condition. After buying the grapes from this semi-abandoned vineyard in 2001, their first vintage was made in an old shed belonging to a fruit packing company; they destemmed the grapes by hand at night, and put them in open fibreglass tanks so that they could crush them with their feet. The idea was to get back to basics.
